Urban and rural areas in Northwest Syria have been under intense rocket and artillery bombardment by Syrian government forces since the beginning of this month. Shockingly, these attacks primarily focus on residential areas, despite being verified by local residents and our field team to lack any military presence.

In less than one week, 23 children lost their lives and 73 others were injured.

As a direct consequence of the concentrated attacks on educational institutions, every single school has been forced to shut its doors. A shocking total of 26 schools were under fire, damaging at least 21 of them.

All civilians in northwest Syria are at imminent risk if immediate action is not taken to halt the crimes against civilians and civilian objects …

“The numbers in this report are likely lower than the actual figures due to the extremely challenging circumstances. We can no longer document all cases due to the precarious security situation in the area, and the high risk associated with field operations.”
A spokesperson from the Documentation Department of the Hurras Network stated, adding:

“There remain five cases of fatalities and 14 injuries that we were unable to reach directly to verify their status. The situation is nothing short of catastrophic.”

Despite the recent cautious and relative calm in northwest Syria, the Syrian government forces targeted new areas on the evening of Wednesday, October 11th, with artillery shelling reaching several towns in northern Idlib as this report was being written.

This report is built  on our monitoring team visits to the attack site, discussions with witnesses and collection of timely data on the incidents.

We urge you to share this report with key decision-makers and influential stakeholders to increase awareness of the situation in Idlib. Together, we can make a difference and enhance the protection of Syrian children.

Sincerely,

Hurras Network
